Television

Television first appeared in the south in the 1960s under American sponsorship when the US set up two channels. Hanoi Radio and Television was established in 1954 but it wasn’t until 1970 that VTV, with Cuban assistance, was born. About 30% of the material is locally filmed and the rest is imported and dubbed into Vietnamese. By far the most popular are Korean and Chinese dramas and martial arts programs. Satellite TV was authorized in the early 1990s.
