Everyone has their favourite repair person. Ask around. Your landlord or maid may know someone in the area. Failing that, become friends with a xe om driver. They can usually get things done for you and find all those things you need but would spend hours tracking down. The Oxford Picture Dictionary is great if you need to explain a technical detail. Get the English/Vietnamese version and you can just point to what you want. They’re sold at most bookstores on Trang Tien Street.

Aside from the ‘fancy’ salons there are other places to get your hair cut.  The fellows who ply their trade along the street charge 20,000 vnd and up. The ‘hole in the wall – down an alley’ salons have great shampoo/head and face massages for 30,000 vnd and up. (it depends on the quality of shampoo and conditioner – go for it – break the bank – try one of the deluxe 40,000 vnd hair washes) cuts range from 30,000 vnd and up. Word of warning – gentlemen – check there are scissors in the hair salons for men.

KEY CUTTING
The day of the itinerant key cutters is fading. They were the best service in town. They arrived in your lane with their cry ‘Khoa Day’. They cut keys and you could verify that they worked instantly. If your lane doesn’t have a key cutter, go to the corner of Hang Gai and Luong Van Can. They have the best selection. There are still key cutters on street corners. They will even come to your house if you’ve locked yourself out. (personal experience) There are some at the corner of Minh Khai and Bach Mai but before making the trek – ask people in your neighbourhood where your local key cutter is stationed.
