Buses

Hanoi city bus in action
Our much maligned buses have a wonderful history with a happy ending. (motorbike drivers may disagree with me). “In the old days, said the ancient one, “buses were an experience in frustration. No defined routes or maps, no information about changes in the route and the bus companies jockeyed for position – racing between stops to pick up fares. Prices changed arbitrarily. There were of course some good points. You could watch the road go by through the floor boards. The cooling rain came through the roof and young men at the doors would haul you up the broken stairs. Oh, and did I mention the seats that collapsed when you sat down. Always fun to ride the bus.”
Enter the savior (who didn’t have to be here as he was over retirement age) and his adorable wife (who kept the International choir going). His life’s work was designing bus systems for ‘the people’. One of the companies was courageous enough to join with him to upgrade the public transport. Now there are maps ! Defined routes ! Bus shelters ! And buses that don’t collapse under you ! Who would-a thunk it was possible !
