Hanoi was once a city of canals, rivers and lakes. The Temple of Literature was on an island according to a map from the 1400s. Development has taken its toll and except for the swan paddle boats on Truc Bach Lake and in the zoo, and a few rowboats on West Lake there are few chances to get out on the water.
