Religion
Freedom of religion is written in the constitution but few people will commit to their beliefs when the national census takers arrive at the door – although you would never know it judging by the crowds in the temples on special days. The number and size of temples, pagodas and churches has increased dramatically in the past 10 years. An increase in disposable income coupled with a more lenient government policy has encouraged a return to open prayer. A common lament is that the youth are more interested in the cult of the ‘MOBILEPHONE’ than honouring their ancestral beliefs. (DUH ! Teens cruising the malls instead of going to church … so what’s new ? Ed)
Listed are the major churches and one mosque. We leave you to explore the temples and pagodas on your own. There are listings in most tourist websites. An excellent resource is: http://www.asia.msu.edu/seasia/Vietnam/religion.html
