Since 2006, the government has implemented stricter work permit laws. Your employer should take care of all this for you. The procedures are quite straight forward – medical check, police check in Vietnam, certified copies of your degrees – so bring the appropriate paperwork with you. Employers differ, some will pay for the procedure, some will reimburse you after a year and some expect you to pay for the work yourself.

Don’t try this at home folks. The tax pixies are an international breed who revel in chaos. There is a new decree 100/2008/ND-CP which came into affect in January 2009. Revisions and additions have been added since then. Check with a tax accountant as to your status and responsibilities. Following are the tax rates to the best of our knowledge.
